Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Technician in our Detroit or Ann Arbor, Michigan office. The position will assist with sample collection of diverse materials including, but not limited to, soil, soil gas, sediment, water, and air for environmental tests; conduct oversight of environmental remediation construction projects, conduct phase I and II investigations, conduct vapor intrusion investigations, provide neat, accurate, and comprehensive documentation of all field-related activities to senior level project personnel; and provide additional field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public sector client base. The role requires a strong willingness to perform fieldwork, including overnights and weekends. An interest in building a career in the environmental consulting field is essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct oversight of contractors and manage field operations that may include (but not limited to) installation/completion of soil borings, soil gas wells, sub-slab soil gas points and monitoring wells.
  • Collect soil, soil gas and groundwater samples from soil borings, soil gas wells, sub-slab soil gas points and monitoring wells.
  • Log soils and produce boring logs when completing soil borings, soil gas wells, sub-slab soil gas points and monitoring wells.
  • Conduct oversight of contractors during environmental remediation activities (including in-situ and ex-situ treatments).
  • Conduct field tests including (but not limited to) hydraulic tests, pressure tests (sub-slab), compaction tests, and other field tests associated with soil, soil gas and groundwater conditions.
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, construction schedules & progress reports;
  • Assure project documentation is correct and consistent with company policy & procedures;
  • Interact with project personnel (contractors, project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communications and participation in work progress meetings;
  • Assist in the preparation of the final reports, work plans, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices;
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company’s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures; and
  • Perform tasks in other company practice areas including general construction services, environmental sampling, contractor oversight, or construction quality assurance activities, as needed.

Education and Licensure

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and a minimum of four (4) years of applicable experience; or an Associate degree or equivalent from a two-year college and a minimum of two (2) years of applicable experience; or a Bachelor’s degree in science, construction management, engineering, physical science, environmental science, or related subjects; or equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, technical experience in construction services, geotechnical, environmental, or related engineering disciplines. Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • Current OSHA 40-hr HAZWOPER training and refreshers. (preferred)
  • Applied consulting experience in planning and performing field investigations (e.g., drilling, logging, well installation, soil, and groundwater sampling, etc.). (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, water, and air .(preferred).
  • Practical field experience conducting operation and maintenance of mechanical systems including simple troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems. (preferred)
  • Exposure to the execution of in-situ and ex-situ remediation projects technologies such as chemical injection technologies, pump and treat systems, and landfill gas recovery systems. (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Strong mathematical background with the ability to perform calculations in basic geometry and use of algebra. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)
