Job Description Summary

Under the supervision of the Manager Engineering and/or assigned Engineer Trainer, the student prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from rough or detailed sketches or notes; plans, directs, and coordinates manufacturing processes; develops and tests machinery and equipment under direction of engineering staff; researches, plans, and designs mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, and directs and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems by performing the following duties.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Job Description

  • Makes final sketch of proposed part drawings, checking dimension of parts tolerancing, materials to be used, relation of one part to another, and relation of various parts to whole structure or project. Makes any necessary or desired revisions. Creates finished designs from sketches.
  • Utilizes knowledge of various machines, engineering practices and processes, mathematics, building materials, and other physical sciences to complete drawings.
  • Creates charts for representation of statistical data.
  • Develops, evaluates, and improves manufacturing methods.
  • Analyzes and plans work force utilization, space requirements, and workflow, and designs layout of equipment and workspace for maximum efficiency.
  • Confers with engineering staff concerning product design and tooling to ensure efficient production methods.
  • Confers with vendors to determine product specifications of equipment, materials, or parts, and evaluates products according to specifications and quality standards.
  • Confers with management, engineering, and other staff regarding manufacturing capabilities, production schedules, and other considerations to facilitate production processes.
  • Applies statistical methods to estimate future manufacturing requirements and potential.
  • Develops, evaluates and improves all relevant documents which pertain to the control of the manufacturing process.
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software.
  • Evaluates installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Reviews project instructions, data, and prints to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problem, and possible solutions such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Designs new or modified mechanical components or assemblies for products such as industrial equipment and machinery, power equipment, servosystems, machine tools, and measuring instruments.
  • Sets up and conducts tests of complete units and components under operational conditions to investigate design proposals to obtain data for development, standardization, and quality control.
  • Analyzes indicated and calculated test results in relation to design or rated specifications.
  • Records and analyzes numerical and graphical data from test procedures.
  • Comply with all environmental policies, procedures and programs.

Required Skills and Education

  • Must have High School Diploma or GED
  • Must be enrolled in accredited college or university
  • Must be able to complete 18 school credits per year
  • Must maintain 2.0 GPA or higher
  • Must be able to work 20+ hours a week
