Summary:

Provides occupational therapy services as assigned by and under the supervision of an OTR . Keeps treatment skills upgraded through continuing education, program development, and research.

Age Specific Responsibility:

Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in the assigned department/program. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient' requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's/program' policies and procedures.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

A. Provides patient care.

  • Assists occupational therapist in treatment planning and conducting evaluation procedures.
  • Assists the occupational therapist in treating patients utilizing modalities, therapeutic exercise, assistive devices, and functional activities.
  • Provides verbal and/or written feedback to primary occupational therapist regarding all significant observations or changes in the patients condition, reaction, and response to treatment.
  • Aids the occupational therapist in estimating equipment and supply needs and may participate in the acquisition and inventory of these items.
  • Provides coverage of patients in the absence of other staff.

B. Maintains proper occupational therapy documentation according to established time standards.

C. Communicates with other appropriate people to integrate OT treatment as necessary, or as directed.

  • Participates in educational program for patients, patient's families, and health care workers regarding treatment procedures, functional activities, and home programs.
  • Participates in patient care conferences as requested.

D. Participates in various meetings and inservices as assigned.
E. Functions as a patient advocate and maintains patient confidentiality.

Other Job Responsibilities:

F. Assists in the training, evaluation and supervision of Occupational Therapy Assistant students and volunteers.

G. Assists in maintaining clean and orderly treatment areas.

H. Supports program operations as assigned.

Customer Service Responsibilities:

Demonstrates excellent customer service behaviors consistent with organizational and departmental standards. Consistently promotes teamwork and direct communication with co-workers. Deals discretely and sensitively with confidential information.

Responsibilities in Quality Improvement:

Participates in the review and evaluation of quality and appropriateness of care. Contributes by participating in meetings, identifying problems and seeking solutions. Assists in provision of quality patient care; participates in departmental/programmatic efforts to monitor and report.

Essential Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements):

  • Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant program.
  • Certification by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy.
  • Registration with the State of Michigan.
  • The physical ability to lift, position, and transport patients with physical impairments.
  • Possesses and maintains CPR certification to meet department/program protocol.
