Senior Bridge Engineer/Project Manager
Location: Grand Rapids, Lansing, or Novi, MI

Job Summary
This leadership position in the Transportation Department will routinely interact with the Transportation Director, Team Leaders, and other senior leaders at Fishbeck. Opportunities for internal growth and ownership in the firm are anticipated in this role. The Transportation Department is one of the largest departments at Fishbeck with over 80 employees, operations in 3 States, and annual sales of $24 million.
Primary Functions
  • Manage existing bridge projects in the pipeline and ensure complete and timely submittals to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and other agencies. Provide mentorship and guidance to bridge engineers during plan development.
  • Provide supervision, administration, engineering, and training bridge design engineers who are responsible for the design and preparation of contract plans and specifications for highway bridges, railroad bridges, pedestrian bridges, culverts, retaining walls, noise walls, and other related structures as well as providing design assistance during construction.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with MDOT bridge squad leaders, support leaders (MDOT Geotechnical, Hydraulics, Environmental, etc.), and regions to obtain information on upcoming bridge projects to position Fishbeck in a favorable position for the pursuit.
  • Develop relationships with other consultants and teaming partners. Provide input in teaming arrangements for pursuits.
  • Work with our marketing operations team, Fishbeck staff, and other consultants to lead proposals for MDOT and other agencies. Once selected for a project, develop Fishbeck's priced proposal in accordance with MDOT and other owners' guidelines.
  • Other responsibilities may include:
    • Assist with bridge design marketing activities and development and implementation of the Fishbeck Bridge/Transportation Business Plan.
    • Develop/Position/Lead Fishbeck for MDOT Program Manager projects and Owner's Rep Design-Build Contracts.
    • Attend and represent Fishbeck in professional organizations' meetings and events (American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC), MDOT/ACEC Partnering Conference, MDOT/ACEC Bridge Committee, Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), MDOT Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) Conference, Golf Outings, etc.) to develop and maintain Fishbeck client relationships.
    • Leverage relationships to develop municipal and private projects (non-DOT) with new and existing clients.
  • Assist with recruiting new staff for all of Fishbeck's transportation services.
Minimum Physical Requirements
Occasionally exposed to light lifting, sitting, and walking. Will perform duties in the field and will be required to access and maneuver around project sites and use a computer. Capable of traveling to and from projects is required. Ability to use equipment for communication and documentation purposes. Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
Desired Education
Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering
Desired Skills/Experience
  • PE license required.
  • 15 + years of experience in related bridge engineering positions working on MDOT and LAP projects.
  • Experience with AASHTO LRFD and LFD Bridge Design Specifications are required.
  • Microstation, AutoCAD/Civil 3D software, and other design modeling software experience is a plus.
  • Experience leading a design team and mentoring junior engineers.
  • Thorough understanding of the MDOT Bridge Design Manual and Guides, Standard Specifications for Construction, and project development process required by MDOT and other Local Public Agencies
  • Ability to lead a multi-discipline bridge design project.
