This role will provide outstanding Guest Services within our Engineering TEAM, responsible for maintaining the appearance and functionality of the hotel. Role and Responsibilities

A Chief Engineer is primarily responsible for meeting and maintaining guest satisfaction by providing refined and well-crafted details from the moment the guest arrives at the hotel, providing comfort and a visual experience that will not be forgotten or mistaken. Provide leadership and empowering the Engineering TEAM to strive for excellence and repeat business.

  • Ensure exceptional customer service by setting a positive example and providing our guests with the best service, courtesy, and care by responding promptly to guest requests, concerns, and complaints to ensure overall satisfaction.
  • Review and share guest comments and scorecard results with team members to celebrate achievements. Plan, organize and conduct departmental daily pre-shift and team member meetings monthly.
  • Fosters strong working relationships within Engineering and, equally important, with other departments by communicating effectively, verbally, and writing to provide clear direction, assigning and instructing team members in work details. Share any relevant information with corresponding departments to ensure a successful outcome daily.
  • Lead, direct, and organize all aspects of Engineering activities and operations. Ensure the highest quality standards for maintaining all areas of the hotel, physical building structure, guest rooms, mechanical, electrical, HVAC systems, and related equipment per energy conservation and preventative maintenance programs to ensure maximum profitability.
    • Use an effective inspection program to ensure all maintenance, renovations, repairs, and the safety and efficiency of building and equipment - as stated above and applying company policy, procedures, and service standards in coordination with the General Manager.
    • Participate in the management of all rehabilitation, expansion, and special projects.
    • Adhere to all corporate required purchasing policies and controls, including all outside contractor bids, budgets, and schedules.
    • Maintain effective energy management and preventative maintenance programs, conducting special training for other operating departments on the hotel's safe and effective equipment and energy use.
    • Inform the General Manager and hotel department leaders regularly regarding the specific and overall condition of the building structure(s), related systems, and equipment offering prudent, and cost-effective proposals for maintaining the same.
    • Interview, hire, and train in the procedures and techniques of Engineering. Training includes detailed instruction on service standards, preventative maintenance, repairs, renovations, sanitation, chemicals for different surfaces and procedures, and how to report on issues and work orders.
    • Supervise the adherence to all applicable federal, state, local safety and health regulations and corporate standards.
    • As part of the Safety Team, assist with leading and performing in the hotel's safety programs such as OSHA/Safety programs, Emergency Evacuation and Fire Alarm Response, creating awareness throughout the hotel and everyday job functions.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor work schedules for all Engineering operations, determining days off, ensuring staffing levels are based on occupancy and any current or anticipated projects for continued maximization of profits.
    • Submitting timely and accurate payroll records to ensure team member satisfaction; therefore, daily review of time and attendance records and making appropriate corrections is essential.
    • Ensure proper cleanliness, use, repair of all Engineering equipment and closet/storage areas. Control inventories of equipment, tools, and other supplies; reorder promptly to ensure team members have the tools and resources necessary to perform their duties daily.
    • Improves service performance via performance reviews, coaching, counseling, and disciplining team members. When appropriate, deficiencies are corrected to ensure standards are met and assign team members additional training when needed.
  • Available to report to the hotel immediately in the event of an emergency which necessitates the skills and expertise of the Chief Engineer, e.g., emergencies may include, but not be limited to fires, power or other equipment failures, floods, earthquake, or other disasters of similar nature and magnitude.
  • Review current standards and introducing hotel-wide changes such as those affecting Engineering to ensure the hotel is in compliance. Maintain and review computerized records for budgeting and forecasting department expenses and make decisions based on information to ensure maximum profitability.
  • Ensure guest satisfaction includes the prompt return of lost or items accidentally left behind in our hotels; therefore, overseeing the hotel's Lost & Found procedures is critical.
  • Provide instruction and guidance for guest's and team member's safety in fire or other emergencies.
  • Report all suspicious persons or activities, hazardous conditions, etc., to Safety & Security Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Specific Job Knowledge and Skills:

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities and explain and demonstrate that he/she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  • Knowledge of OSHA Safety and Chemical Standards and Department of Health and Sanitation regulations. Knowledge of chemical cleaning agents, proper labeling, and operation of various industrial equipment. Knowledge of Hotel Corporate policies and basic sanitation requirements/controls and applications of relevant chemicals to safeguard our team members, guests, and hotel property.
  • Ability to obtain any government-required licenses or certificates.
  • Excellent knowledge of electrical systems, components, devices, HVAC systems, boilers, mechanical systems, and the maintenance and repair of all. Skilled in the proper and safe use of all tools, equipment, materials, chemicals, and products relating to the department.
  • Ability to analyze all associated systems as to their design, intent, and effective performance. Stay abreast of state-of-the-art developments affecting the safe and effective operation of the building facility.
  • Excellent knowledge of public construction and building systems, all related permits, licensing, new and existing codes on public buildings and fire safety.
  • Considerable mathematical skills to prepare complex calculations for financial reporting via a moderately complex system to meet deadlines, complete necessary reports and understand information from the hotel, regional or corporate offices, ability to read manufacturer's instructions, schematics, and blueprints.
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs. on a regular and continuous basis and bend, stretch, stoop, squat, and frequently lift 50 lbs. Occasionally lift 100 lbs. Ability to perform tasks while consistently bending, stooping, kneeling, or standing and at times while supporting additional weight up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to stand and walk the hotel's inner and outer perimeter throughout the shift and, at times, work in a confined space. Ability to climb stairs and ladders, working at heights up to approximately 30 feet.
  • The ability to work under hazardous conditions includes various physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, or exposure to chemicals.
  • Subjected to atmospheric conditions, one or more of the following conditions that affect the respiratory system or the skin: fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation and oils; there is air and skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids.
  • Requires manual dexterity to use and operate all necessary equipment and grasping, writing, sitting, repetitive motions, climbing, listening and hearing ability, and visual acuity.
  • Vision occurs continuously, with the most common visual functions being near, color vision, and depth perception.

  • Environmental Conditions:

Other Expectations:

* Due to the seasonal nature of the hospitality industry, team members may be required to work varying schedules to reflect the hotel's business needs. This includes nights, weekends, and/or holidays. Regular attendance in conformance with the standards is essential to the successful performance of this position. Irregular attendance may be subject to disciplinary action up to and including severing employment.

* To ensure a safe and healthy working environment, all team members are required to comply with health and safety standards, regulations, and procedures and take on the responsibility and wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as determined by position and duties; training will be provided.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED and certification of graduation from an apprenticeship, advance training program for operating engineers recognized by the industry and trade; 6-years' experience performing building maintenance in a hotel or related industry; or
  • 2-year degree from an accredited university in electrical, civil engineering or building maintenance or related major, 4-years' experience performing building maintenance in a hotel or related industry; or
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in electrical or civil engineering, 3-years' experience performing building maintenance in a hotel or related industry.
  • 1-year of supervisory or management experience in the same or similar environment required. Electrical License, Refrigeration License, Fire Safety License, and Professional Engineering License preferred.
  • Valid, current driver's license required. CPR Certification required, Frist Aide training, and AED Certification preferred. Tuberculosis clearance certification (CA) required.
  • Given that our guests visit our hotels from all regions of the world, additional/multilingual ability is preferred to provide a personalized experience to our guests.
