Due to our continued growth, we are searching for a Technical Design Director.

Objective of this role: To help HDR elevate design excellence with design leadership and by advancing architectural detailing. This position is both a design leadership role and a design expertise role for an architectural practice of about 1,700 employees in 20+ offices worldwide. This is a firm-wide leadership position and will report to HDR's Global Director of Architectural Design.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Represent and demonstrate design leadership throughout HDR's architecture practice with strengths in architectural detailing and design rigor.
  • Serve as an expert architectural design resource throughout design practice.
  • Participate with design leaders to contribute to firm-wide initiatives and strategic objectives.
  • Develop technical detailing design expertise among design professionals.
  • Advance design quality by contributing to a practice-wide culture of design excellence.
  • Help advance effective processes to deliver high quality design solutions.
  • Collaborate with global design director to provide direction and organizational strategy to consistently achieve design excellence firmwide.
  • Collaborate with sustainable design experts to advance firm's sustainable design objectives.
  • Contribute to the development of preferred design details library to sustain excellence.
  • Contribute towards the research of materials and systems for quality design solutions.
  • Contribute to the provision of new technical data for firm's master specification platform.

Project Work Contributions:

  • Work with project design teams to bring rigor and achieve excellence in design detailing.
  • Serve as an expert resource to advise and assist project teams with design detailing guidance.
  • Serve as an expert resource for design detailing, architectural enclosure systems, the use and interface of materials, enclosure integrity all while maintaining design intent.
  • Integrate sustainable design practices and promote carbon neutral solutions.
  • Coordinate with HDR's digital delivery leaders to ensure incorporation of technical data into project delivery processes, details, standards, and documents.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Architecture
  • 15 years related experience
  • Registered Architect
  • Must have experience on large-scale projects
  • Must be able to lead a team on projects
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Project)
  • Extensive knowledge and experience within the local and regional market
  • Strong team leadership, mentoring, motivational/organizational and people skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be willing to travel
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must

Preferred Qualifications

  • Expertise using Autodesk Revit
  • Expertise in preparation of architectural contract documents and specifications
  • Expertise in sustainable design with familiarity of carbon neutral design strategies
  • Expertise in building energy modeling and performance
  • Expertise in building envelope design throughout the various climate zones
  • Familiarity of codes affecting compliance and performance of the building envelope
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Service-oriented for our clients and commitment to teamwork and helping others
  • LEED accredited professional or equal sustainable design capabilities
  • Extensive experience in architectural design detailing

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.) Pay ranges: San Francisco: $167,440 - $239,200, Los Angeles: $148,120 - $211,600, Seattle: $154,560 - $220,800, Denver: $141,680 - $202,400, New York: $161,000 - $230,000.
